Dr. Yoni Freedhoff And Deceptive Food Marketing

Dr. Yoni Freedhoff is a medical doctor and assistant professor at the University of Ottawa.

In 2012, he was invited to deliver a speech at a food industry breakfast, about what the food industry could do to improve public health.

However, they cancelled their invitation without any explanation, several days before the event.

Instead, Dr. Freedhoff posted his talk and slides on YouTube and reached a much larger audience this way, at 400 thousand views and counting.

His presentation clearly outlines the deceits that both adults and children are being exposed to in western countries by the food companies.

These companies seem to get away with false advertising, often making health claims that don’t stand up to scrutiny.

Many of the products they market as “healthy” are actually little more than highly processed junk foods.

Thoughts on Government Interventions

In my personal opinion, children should be protected from the deceitful marketing tactics by the food industry.

Marketing harmful foods towards children and making false claims in advertisements should be banned.

I can definitely see how too much government intervention could become a disaster. They could do something unfounded like placing taxes on saturated fat, for example.

But really, I just can not see any reason not to take measures to protect our children from these deceitful marketing tactics until they become old enough to make their own decisions.

These deceits, directed towards innocent children, are unacceptable and should not be allowed.
